About
This unit covers the grabs and holds that an attacker will likely use when they are trying to control a victim (over 30 situations and techniques to escape them). This is also the unit where, as a student, you will begin to get comfortable with both the instructor and other students in the class before getting “closer” with grappling/ground defense. It is important that we maintain consistency, practicing the moves every day in between classes, and remember your first goal is avoidance, verbal de-escalation, and distance control. Most of the movement drills we do are for transition between standing and ground, (forward and backward rolls for example), due to the fact that it is likely that a “bad guy” pushes or tries to control you by taking you to the ground. Although this is not our ground defense unit, it is important that students learn how to control a fall and maneuver to get back up right away. *Variations in classes depend on location; Some instructors will teach this unit as a whole (in a weekend course), or in as many as 4-6 classes. Therefore, what is in this lesson (Unit 2), may be divided amongst several classes, or cover a time period of over a month. **If taking this course online, please allow the time and repetitions needed to "learn" the moves.
